The technology group Wärtsilä, together with partners Fastems, Leinolat, Prohoc, Roima Intelligence, Synocus, Tasowheel and VTT, has established a new manufacturing ecosystem. The OSME (Open Smart Manufacturing Ecosystem) initiative will combine with Wärtsilä’s Smart Technology Hub in Vaasa to transform manufacturing collaboration and foster knowledge sharing.
The OSME initiative is based on Wärtsilä’s recognition of the importance of reframing its manufacturing to better meet market needs. The Smart Technology Hub sees Wärtsilä as an extended enterprise and OSME further engages, supports and leverages upon the skills and strengths of its partners.
“This project is an important element within our vision of a Smart Technology Hub ecosystem. Our purpose is to innovate with sustainable technology and services to help our customers continuously improve their environmental and economic performance. Our strong belief is that the OSME programme provides a forum where we can share solutions, data, and ideas regarding manufacturing, allowing us to establish a network of excellence at both national and international levels. This will enable Wärtsilä and the other ecosystem partners to adapt and innovate to market needs, and to lead the decarbonisation journey in our industry”, says Vesa Riihimäki, Director, Delivery Management at Wärtsilä.
The OSME partner companies will each bring a complimentary capability to the collaboration. By emphasising creativity and through co-creation, an integrated approach can be developed where knowledge, capabilities, technology, systems, and solutions to common problems can be shared. This will result in a more resilient value chain based on distributed manufacturing as a differentiator.
Currently manufacturing faces unprecedented change. Lead times are getting shorter, quality and resilience requirements more stringent, and traceability demands strengthen the ties between suppliers and principals. There is also a growing need to reduce emissions and the carbon footprint of operations. No single company can meet these challenges alone, and the OSME initiative will address them through its four pillars, as follows:
Open
In manufacturing, openness means sharing with others, which builds trust over time. The OSME members’ long-term collaboration is based on trust.
Smart
Being smart means focusing on continuous learning, with activities and events shaping how we proceed. The OSME members will continually consider alternative scenarios, evaluate new situations as they emerge, and move forward with an open and learning mindset.
Manufacturing
Finland is one of the most manufacturing intensive countries in Europe. By building on this strength, OSME will drive the transformation of manufacturing towards improved sustainability and efficiency with the help of digitalization. The ambition is to make OSME an international benchmark.
Ecosystems
Success in collaboration comes from committed individuals with a strong purpose. OSME aims to motivate and engage individuals to become the world’s most inspiring community for manufacturing professionals.
The OSME collaboration also comprises a growing number of Associate Partners that will provide additional strengths to the network. The first Associate Partners are ABB, Fliq, Nimetech, Sandvik, Valmet Automotive, and the University of Vaasa. OSME will also be supported by Business Finland and its growth engine MEX Finland, orchestrated by Synocus.
