Ecosystem of collaboration

Wärtsilä’s purpose is to enable sustainable societies through innovation in technology and services. The demand for clean and flexible energy and the need for efficient and safe transportation are increasingly affecting the way that customers operate. This forms the basis for Wärtsilä’s path towards decarbonisation in the Marine and Energy sectors.

The Sustainable Technology Hub is the place where we turn our visions into reality. In STH we are able to do research, develop, innovate and pilot products and solutions that will support our journey towards a sustainable society. This is done together with ecosystems of players; companies, start-ups, organisations and academia. Wärtsilä’s close collaboration with the ecosystem will continue to develop through STH.

STH is linked to Wärtsilä´s other Centres of Excellence globally and the Partner Campus even further deepens the collaboration with both local and global partners by acting as a natural platform for mutual innovation and co-creation. The location of STH is furthermore strengthening the ecosystem. The energy cluster in the Vaasa region is the leading energy region in the Nordics, and together with other key-players, we will position ourselves as a leading ecosystem of collaboration.

Technology Partners

The Sustainable Technology Hub is building an ecosystem way of working. This includes working together with external partners. The STH Technology Partner concept deepens the collaboration between Wärtsilä and its partners and brings with it multiple synergies. The partners will make sure that the technology centre will be equipped with modern products and solutions, making it a benchmark to the world.

Partner Campus

Co-creation and innovation together with partners and stakeholders are an important part of the Sustainable Technology Hub. STH therefore includes a Partner Campus. However, it is not only a physical place, but also a model for co-creating new business and solutions together with companies, universities and other stakeholders.

Partner Campus is a tangible step in actualizing our Wärtsilä purpose of enabling sustainable societies through innovation in technology and services. Partner Campus is a flexible platform securing innovation that develops new, exciting energy sources in order to create sustainable societies.

Ecosystem projects like FAME (Finnish Additive Manufacturing Ecosystem), OSME (Open Smart Manufacturing Ecosystem) and ZEM (Zero Emission Marine) play a key role in fostering innovation and collaboration. Read more about these projects here.

Harbour

The Sustainable Technology Hub is situated close to the harbour which offers great possibilities in terms of green shipping, smart port development and collaboration.

In the port of Vaasa there is also Wasaline’s new ferry Aurora Botnia. It is one of the most environmentally friendly passenger vessels on earth, and also acts as a floating testlab for STH and thus enables real-time monitoring. Furthermore, there is an LNG terminal in Vaskiluoto, Vaasa, from where liquefied natural gas is delivered to STH and to Wasaline’s new passenger vessel.

The energy region

The Vaasa region in western Finland and the energy technology companies in the region form the largest energy cluster in the Nordic countries. Together, the cluster represents over 160 companies and 12 000 employees, and 5.5% of Finland’s export.

Wärtsilä is an important key-player in the energy cluster, and the distance to the other companies in the cluster is short both physically and mentally. This enables fast and seamless collaboration between the energy companies in the region.
