Ecosystem of Collaboration

Wärtsilä’s purpose is to enable sustainable societies with smart technology. The demand for clean and flexible energy and the need for efficient and safe transportation are increasingly affecting the way that customers operate. This forms the basis for Wärtsilä’s visions of a Smart Marine Ecosystem and a 100% renewable energy future.

The Smart Technology Hub is the place where we turn our visions into reality. In the Hub we will be able to do research, develop, innovate and pilot products and solutions that will support our journey towards a sustainable society. This is done together with ecosystems of players; companies, start-ups, organisations and academia. Wärtsilä’s close collaboration with the ecosystem will continue to develop through the Smart Technology Hub.

The Hub will be linked to Wärtsilä´s other Centres of Excellence globally and the Smart Partner Campus will even further deepen the collaboration with both local and global partners by acting as a natural platform for mutual innovation and co-creation. The location of the Hub is furthermore strengthening the ecosystem. The energy cluster in the Vaasa region is the leading energy region in the Nordics, and together with other key-players, we will position ourselves as a leading ecosystem of collaboration.

Smart Partner Campus

Co-creation and innovation together with partners and stakeholders are an important part of the Smart Technology Hub. The Hub will therefore include a Smart Partner Campus. However, it is not only a physical place, but also a model for co-creating new business and solutions together with companies, universities and other stakeholders.

Smart Partner Campus is a tangible step in actualizing our Wärtsilä purpose of enabling sustainable societies with smart technologies. The Smart Partner Campus will be a flexible platform securing innovation that develops new, exciting energy sources in order to create sustainable societies.

Logistic Center Wärtsilä rajattu

Logistics Centre

Next to the Smart Technology Hub there will be a Logistics Centre. The centre will coordinate all Wärtsilä deliveries in Vaasa. DHL Supply Chain (Finland) Oy will operate the new Logistics Centre of Wärtsilä. After the Logistics Centre is finished, DHL  will implement the indoor infrastructure in cooperation with Wärtsilä, utilizing latest logistics technologies and automation solutions, and run the future operations of the centre.

Harbour

The Smart Technology Hub is situated close to the harbour which offers great possibilities in terms of green shipping, smart port development and collaboration. WALLENIUS SOL has since 2019 shipped Wärtsilä´s ready-made engines southbound from the port of Vaasa to Wärtsilä´s customers worldwide, and equally, all inbound deliveries from Central Europe to Vaasa are routed via a consolidation point in Antwerp.

In the port of Vaasa we will also find Wasaline’s new ferry Aurora Botnia. It will be one of the most environmentally friendly passenger vessels on earth, and also act as a floating test laboratory for the Smart Technology Hub and thus enable real-time monitoring. Furthermore, an LNG terminal will be built in Vaskiluoto, Vaasa this year, from where liquefied natural gas will be delivered to the Smart Technology Hub and to Wasaline’s new passenger vessel.

EnergyVaasa_ecosystem

The Energy Region

The Vaasa region in western Finland and the energy technology companies in the region form the largest energy cluster in the Nordic countries. Together, the cluster represents over 160 companies and 12 000 employees, and 5.5% of Finland’s export.

Wärtsilä, together with Smart Technology Hub, is an important key-player in the energy cluster, and the distance to the other companies in the cluster is short both physically and mentally. This enables fast and seamless collaboration between the energy companies in the region.
